#JwstArt: Juried Show

About:

Twenty two artists were selected nationwide to attend the James Webb Space Telescope Artist Event at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. They sat directly in front of the Webb telescope and were briefed on the mission by scientists, engineers and other project personnel while they worked; sketching, painting, writing, sewing, playing music. This gallery shows their impressions of the Webb Telescope and its mission. For more information, see the press release.

Dane Ault: James Webb Space Telescope

Statement About the Work from the Show Curator

In 2016, I met artist Dane Ault at AwesomeCon. He had a striking series of prints of spacecraft, including Hubble and Cassini - but no James Webb Space Telescope. When asked, he told me that it'd be suggested to him not to bother doing a JWST one until after it launched. I encouraged him not to wait, and invited him for a tour if he had time while he was in town. He came out to Goddard to see the telescope (which was face down at the time, unfortunately), but a few weeks later, he sent me an email with this art. It was really cool to see JWST added to his Science + Nature series of lithographs, and it planted the seed of an idea, which, combined with the first views of JWST's gorgeous gold-coated mirror, culminated in our November 2016 artist event. I was able to put out a call for artists to apply to come see JWST in person, and be inspired to create right in front of it. The event was a success, and the art in this exhibit was produced as a result. - Maggie Masetti
